چکیده

The exact localization of intrahepatic vessels in relation to a tumour is an important issue in oncological liver surgery. For computer-assisted preoperative planning of surgical procedures high quality vessel models are required. In this work we show how to generate such models on the basis of registered CT or MRI data at different phases of contrast agent propagation. We combine well-established intensity-based rigid and non-rigid registration approaches using Mutual Information as distance measure with a masking strategy as well as intensity inhomogeneity correction for MRI data. Non-rigid deformations are modeled by multilevel cubic B-splines. Quantitative evaluations of 5 MRI and 5 CT image pairs show that the liver moves rigidly 7.1 (+/4.2) mm on average, while the remaining non-rigid deformations range from 2-3 mm. As a result we find that masked rigid registration is necessary and in many cases also sufficient. After non-rigid registration the matching shows no deviations in most cases.

Analysis of CT Images of Liver for Surgical Planning

We developed a Computer Assisted Surgery system which prepared a virtual environment for a physician to interact with the liver and decide on the therapy planning. It was composed of three modules: liver segmentation, vessel extraction, and simulator. We proposed a semi-automatic method to segment the liver. Hepatic veins, portal veins, and hepatic arteries were extracted from multi-phase CT da...

Segmentation and separation of venous vasculatures in liver CT images

Computer-aided analysis of venous vasculatures including hepatic veins and portal veins is important in liver surgery planning. The analysis normally consists of two important pre-processing tasks: segmenting both vasculatures and separating them from each other by assigning different labels. During the acquisition of multi-phase CT images, both of the venous vessels are enhanced by injected co...

Visualization and Quantification of 3D Flow Characteristics in the Portal Venous System

Introduction: Chronic liver disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Almost 20% of patients have cirrhosis at presentation [1]. Previous studies have shown that alteration of hepatic perfusion parameters measured with CT or ultrasound in patients with liver cirrhosis correlate with the severity of chronic liver disease and the therapeutic outcome [2,3]. Recent studies assess li...

Fully automatic anatomical, pathological, and functional segmentation from CT scans for hepatic surgery.

OBJECTIVE To improve the planning of hepatic surgery, we have developed a fully automatic anatomical, pathological, and functional segmentation of the liver derived from a spiral CT scan. MATERIALS AND METHODS From a 2 mm-thick enhanced spiral CT scan, the first stage automatically delineates skin, bones, lungs, kidneys, and spleen by combining the use of thresholding, mathematical morphology...
